Why does my city water taste bad?

February 11, 2019 by Alan

The truth is, the fact that your city water is palatable at all is an absolute miracle. The city water department is under ever increasing pressure to provide water of a better quality and with fewer contaminants. They do an amazing job of providing you with safe, usable water but in many cases the customer’s demands are simply not in touch with reality.

First of all, the city water department is tasked with filtering, treating and distributing enough water for everyone to water their lawn, wash their car, do their laundry, bathe, clean, …… cook, and drink. I bet not one customer has ever even considered buying enough bottled water to water the lawn, but that is exactly what they expect the city water department to do and at a tiny fraction of the cost. The craziest part of it is that you use less than 2% of the water they supply for cooking and drinking. So we need to understand that given the volume of water they have to treat each day there is only so much that can be done.

Secondly, the water has to get from the treatment plant to your house. The water mains in most cities have been in use for a long time and can have lots of different kinds of build up inside. This can harbor all kinds of contaminants and minerals that can add unwanted taste and odor to the water. This has no effect on the overall safety of the water you will use for irrigation and cleaning, but could affect the food and drinks you make as well as the taste and odor of the water itself.

Third, the chemicals used to disinfect the water and the other chemicals they create add a whole new dimension to the question.

In the beginning most cities used chlorine to disinfect the water and kill all the bacteria so the water would be safe to use. This was the way it was done for many years until they discovered that the chlorine, when acting on organic material, produced by-products. A class of chemical compounds called trihalomethanes or THM’s identified as cancer causing compounds. The level of these compounds was then regulated by the government. These acceptable levels were lowered over time to the point that it was almost impossible for city water plants to meet them. If they used enough chlorine to make sure the water was safe the THM’s would be too high and if they used too little chlorine all the bacteria might not be killed and the water would not be safe. This was not an easy spot for them to be in and a solution needed to be found.

In comes a new thing called chloramines. Chloramination involves the addition of anhydrous or aqueous ammonia (NH3) before or after the addition of chlorine (HOCl) to produce monochloramine (NH2Cl). Monochloramine is 200 times less effective as a disinfectant than chlorine, but is an attractive alternative since it does not react as readily with organic materials to form THMs. They are also learning that it does not work in waters with a low pH which then causes them to add other things to correct that.

So now you know the water has chlorine, ammonia, trihalomethanes, and chloramines in it and that it is transported to your house through miles of old water mains. This should be enough information to help you understand that although your city water department may be doing a wonderful job, the expectation of great tasting, odor free water at your house may be a bit much. It is easy to understand why your city water may have a bad taste or odor.

Now that you know why the water tastes bad, you probably would like to know if there is anything you can do about it. Well as a matter of fact there is. At Aqua Sphere we are always looking for the best way to solve a problem and our efforts have resulted in the ASI ChemX-FilterPlete. The ASI ChemX-FilterPlete not only makes any city water taste great by removing any bad taste or odor but also removes those chemicals and chemical compounds we discussed above. This gives you the water you want to have inside your home while leaving the utility water on the outside for lawn watering and car washing.

Make the perfect cup of tea

December 19, 2018 by Alan

Aqua Sphere treated water is great for brewing tea. In addition to the usual considerations of temperature, time of infusion, tea quality, the vessel selected to brew the tea in, and so forth, water quality is the most important.

For example, iced tea made with untreated water can turn cloudy and it can create a film that floats in your cup. Aqua Sphere treated water improves the flavor and aroma for better tasting tea and coffee.

So, to make a more perfect cup of tea for yourself or to share with friends this holiday season, consider adding an Aqua Sphere water treatment system to your home. Our team will come to your house and help you determine which options are perfect for you. Call today to schedule your visit.

Dip’s Tips

September 13, 2018 by Alan

Just why in the world does your water look yellow?

Hey friends,

It’s your old pal Dippy here. I love to keep up to date with what’s going on with water because, well, I have to be in the water to stay alive. Water is that important to you, too.

Recently, I happened to come across yellow-looking water. If I can’t swim in it, then probably you cannot drink it either. It’s just not healthy. So, why in the world does your water look yellow?

Yellow water is usually caused by traces of rust. Iron and oxygen run through your water system pretty much all the time. Combined, they turn the water into a yellowish color.

Some people might not say it’s that big of a problem. I’m here to tell you that it is. Heck, I’ve got to keep my fins healthy you know!

When sediment remains collects along your pipe’s walls, it can produce some serious damage. That’s no good.

Therefore, you need a solution for that yellow-water problem. Aqua Sphere has a bucket load of water treatment solutions that can send your water problems floating away (I just love water humor, you know).

Make sure you reach out to my buddies at Aqua Sphere and they’ll take care of all your water treatment needs.

Well, I have to get busy swimming around in the water again. I’ll be back with more of my “Dip’s Tips” for you later on. Take care and watch your water!

Fins out,

Dippy

Here Comes Dippy!

August 8, 2018 by Alan

Hey everybody,

We wanted to introduce Aqua Sphere’s newest sidekick, Dippy the Dolphin. He’s a friendly animal who knows all about good, healthy water. Dippy needs it in order to stay alive, just as much as it is important to have clean water for you and your family.

Did you know that 60 percent of our human bodies are made up water? It’s true.

In addition, the Food and Nutrition Board of the Institute of Medicine recommends that women drink 91 ounces of water throughout the day to make your body run normally and remove harmful waste and toxins. For men, the recommended amount is 125 ounces throughout the day. This needs to be done at different intervals, not all at once. Why? Your body needs to have water in order to completely cleanse itself on a regular basis.

Dippy knows about this type of stuff, and you can keep your eyes peeled for “Dip’s Tips” as part of our business. He’ll be providing fun facts for your family to make sure everyone keeps drinking healthy water. It is really good to have someone like Dippy, who also knows about the importance of water treatment practices, on board.

We are so pleased to have Dippy with us here at Aqua Sphere. Keep an eye out for Dippy and his tips and antics throughout our website and social media channels. He’s going to be pretty popular in a matter of time.

What Causes My Water to Look Rusty?

July 29, 2018 by Alan

Today’s water tip has to do with oxidized iron and its effect on your water. Rust is oxidized iron and is known to originate from one of three main sources.  A water main or your own plumbing are two. Iron particles that break free from sediments inside corroded iron or steel pipes cause tap water to turn reddish brown.

Rusty water is also caused by naturally occurring iron dissolved into the water which oxidizes when the ground water is drawn up to the surface and exposed to air.

Many experts say drinking rusty-colored water is OK, but wouldn’t you rather drink clean water all the time? Aqua Sphere cares about the water you drink. We have dealt with this type of water situation many times and know how to clean it up.

When you start to see your water looking a little rusty, contact us immediately. Water is a lifeline for you and your family. Having healthy water to drink every single day is imperative and it’s our job to make your water safe to drink all the time.

COULD YOUR SWIMMING POOL MAKE YOU SICK?

July 3, 2018 by Alan

The Centers for Disease Control warns that some parasites are immune to pool water treatment methods. It is well known that some organisms such as cryptosporidium are resistant to chlorine. These type organisms can live in chlorine treated water. It is recommended that you use an additional form of disinfection on your pool such as UV light or Ozone.
